The Follicular Phase is by definition, the first half of the menstrual cycle, where the body is preparing an egg in the ovaries inside follicles. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is high in the first few days of this phase which stimulates a few developing follicles to compete with eachother for dominance.
One follicle (egg-containing sac) becomes the dominant follicle, which leutenizing hormone (LH) joins in to stimulate further development of. FSH and LH both regulate the production of, and the dominant follicle produces, substantial amounts of oestrogen. Oestrogen is an anabolic hormone, meaning it encourages growth, so as oestrogen levels rise, the follicle continues to grow (can reach 2-3cm in size!), and continues to secrete more oestrogen. Oestrogen levels continue to rise throughout this phase until they peak (along with FSH and LH) right before (1-2 days before) ovulation.
At the same time, the inner lining of the uterus is still rebuilding and thickening preparing for potential implantation following ovulation.
